Expenses for genealogical or heraldic researches

It is very difficult to calculate the expenses of a research on persons, families or coats of arms in advance. There are various factors to keep in mind. The expenses depend on the extent and the goals of the researches as well as on the availability and the preservation of the main records that will be used and evaluated during the researches.

Terms of business

  • Normally we fix the research goals and priorities with our clients in combination with a starting fee or we set a limit for the coming researches. This way the client can be sure that he will not spend more money than he originally intended to. When the (starting)fee is used up, the client will receive an interim report with the results of the researches gathered so far including all documents. The report also includes a research prediction. The client now decides whether to continue the researches or whether to stop the researches at this state.
  • In principle all agreed fees are to be paid in advance. The fee includes on the one hand an hourly wage.

  • We normally calculate an hourly wage between 30,- to 60,- Euro. Then we have to add on all charges and expenses that we have to pay for documents, certificates, for the use of archives, for copies of certificates or records, for the support of registration or civil offices or for external researches that may support us in one or the other case.

  • We always choose the most inexpensive way of getting documents for the client. That means, that we sometimes prefer to engage and to involve a local genealogist or heraldry before we will have a lot of travelling expenses etc. In other cases we also contact directly archives and parishes when we know that they are prepared to undertake genealogical researches.
